Blogging Monks in the News
Well not quite the monks themselves but certainly a blogging reference. Here is a link to BBC News online and that will take you to an article about how blogging is literally helping to change the world. "Burma's cyber-dissidents" by Stephanie Holmes, is a very intriguing article. Burmese Monks have been protesting against their government and unlike the past where the government could handle an up rising how ever they pleased, this time around the government has to deal with the information age. I quote, "Thanks in part to bloggers, this time the outside world is acutely aware of what is happening on the streets of Rangoon, Mandalay and Pakokku and is hungry for more information." It goes on to describe how a blogger from Burma based in London has set up a social network over the Internet and phone to gain picture and video for a blog dedicated to reporting what has and will happen over the time of protest. The blogger's name is Ko Htike and his blog is: http://ko-htike.blogspot.com/ Check it out. Real interesting pictures. I picked to write about this this time around because it was something in the news which I felt was somewhat relative to this class and I thought who ever is reading this might be interested. Let me know what you think.

Those pictures were intense! I feel that blogging can useful to spread the news of other countries. I don't like them to spread MY news, but they can be useful to increase our worldly knowledge.
I think this is certainly something worth blogging about. I hadn't really thought about using blogs to spread information about social injustices, but alas.... It is too bad that senseless killing is occuring in our modern world.
Well, social networking has definitely become one of the important ways for people to communicate. I remember watching news showing the video clip sent back by journalists in Iraq with their cellphones. There are many ways to spread the news and social networking sites will play an important role. It makes the world smaller and brings people closer. One of my blog entries mentioned the increasing number of people who are visiting regularly social networking sites.
It is already an important part in many people's lives.
This example really shows the power and potential of blogs for spreading information worldwide. I feel this is especially important right now because of the way the traditional media has been consolidated into the hands of a few powerful people and businesses with their own objectives.
I think this shows how Blogs will ensure that the voices of the oppressed are always going to be heard regardless of how the stories get spun by local media outlets. Blogs will make sure the truth (or some variation!) is always out there.
Great find. Those pic and videos make a powerful statements. I think it is even more evidence that the walls of state/private media are cracking. Kyle
This is something I can use with my IB kids to help them understand we live in a much bigger world than Denver.
It seems like we can do something with our curiosity when having blogs as a tool. I'm glad you decided to write abou that. I am convinced that I will now use blogs as a second source of news and information from now on. I think that having a computer in front and not an actual problem will help to ease the tensions that are usually present in political and cultural debates. I would hope that blogs can be anonymous in a case where say and autocratic state can use it as a way to be more oppressive. I think there are many places where that can still be the case, let's hope that blogs work to the advantage of social equality and justice.
Wow! What an eye opener. I like that blogs can be used to communicate important information to people on the other side of the world. It was interesting to see how many people had visited the site, and from where they were from. I was excited when I hit 100 visits on my blog! The possibilities for communicating with the planet are endless. The video clips were intense. I would like to try to figure out how to embed video into my blog.
Love this link.
What is great about this kind of "news" is that it is not distorted by our own media filter.
I'm convinced that blogging can be a really great social experiment. Perhaps a great social artistic movement, the first time when anyone and everyone can be heard.
Great find! Thanks for sharing it.
Blogging can be like hours sifting through a thrift store....then you finally find that totally cool coat....this is that good coat in a store full of used clothes.
I am encouraged to see a use of blogging as a way to make the world aware of issues around the world. This truly brings home that we are not isolated beings and that our electronic voice can be heard.
